Site 7 Old Man Saltbush (Atriplex nummularia) This plant is one of 10,000 saltbush plugs established in rows at two metres spacings with six metres between rows. The plant has been grazed by lambs in the autumn/winter of 2006 and in the summer/autumn of 2006/07. Merino wethers are grazing the site in late summer/autumn 2007. The plant has reached an estimated maximum volume of 1.89 cubic metres of available fodder in October 2006. Effective management of Old Man Saltbush is critical for maximising its role in the grazing regime, so that it does not become too woody for the sheep to eat. This can be done with a mechanical roller, or, as is the case at Kamarooka, heavy grazing by sheep. The graph (below) shows the change in plant volume over time and clearly indicates the resilience of the plant and its ability to grow back after heavy grazing.
